Marie Curie-Skłodowska

Born November 7, 1867 in Warsaw
Died  July 4, 1934, in Sancellemoz, France
Born as Maria Skłodowska, international known as Marie Curie after her French husband's name.

She was a physicist and chemist. She was a pioneer in radioactivity. In 1903 she became the first woman in France to complete a doctorate. At the Sorbonne, she met and married Pierre Curie, a fellow-instructor. Together they studied radioactive materials, particularly pitchblende, the ore from which uranium was extracted. They discovered two chemical elements, wich the named polonium and radium. She was the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize (1903, Physics), the first person who received two times a Nobel Prize, (1911, Chemistry) and the only one who received it in two different sciences. She was the first female professor at the Sorbonne. Her death in 1934 was almost certainly due to massive exposure to radiation. She was buried in Sceaux, near Pierre, but in 1995 their ashes were transferred to the Panthéon in Paris.
